Welsh born Ken and Lewis are 13 and 14 when World War II breaks out. Their much older sisters, Gin and Joan, are both married with a child each when their husband’s sign up: Ron with the RAF and Doug with what would become the Eighth Army. Not wanting to let their brothers-in-law go alone, the brothers change their birth certificates to enlist. For the next five years, they would see it all: North Africa and the fight against Rommel; victory at Alam el Halfa; the liberation of Sicily; the awful three month battle of Monte Cassino; the death of brother-in-law Ron; the surrender of Italy; and finally, most awfully, the liberation of Bergen Belsen. All this while they were still teenagers. This is the story of one family during war, at home and at the front, and the war wounds you can’t see.
